Nobes' Trivia Question 16 solution

Two weeks ago, Nobes set you this football trivia poser:

Only three clubs have been unable to do this. The first time in 1995/6, the second in 1998/9, and most recently by a Conference club this season. What?

Did you work out the solution?

The answer, appropriately enough considering last week's theme on the blog, was not being able to defend the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Birmingham were winners of the competition in 1995, but also won League One in the same season and then being a Championship club were unable to defend their trophy.

The same thing happened to Grimsby Town in 1998, who won the League One play-offs in the same season as the Trophy.

The most recent team unable to defend the Trophy are Luton. The Hatters won the competition last season, but were also relegated to the Conference - making them ineligible to compete in it this term.

Congratulations if you got the right answer. Nobes will have answer question for you soon.
