Conference North: May

Our last update from our featured division this season looks at the conclusion of the play-offs.

Fleetwood's final flourish

Fleetwood Town - so long in the race for the title with Southport - secured a place in the next season's Conference with a play-off final victory over Alfreton.

The Lancashire side had only made the final after a dramatic penalty shoot out win over Droylsden in the semi finals.

After losing the first leg 2-0, two first goals took the tie at Highbury into an extra 30 minutes. Both sides scored a further goal to leave the tie 3-3 on aggregate and a penalty shoot out required.

There, Town triumped 5-4 to see off their North West rivals and book a showdown against Alfreton - who saw off Workington 4-1 over two legs.

In the final Gareth Seddon's early strike put Fleetwood in control, but Andy Todd's penalty ten minutes from time levelled matters.

Just two minutes later though, veteran striker Lee Thorpe found the goal to secure Micky Mellon's side a place among Non League's elite.
